Fear – want to know the antidote to fear?

The antidote is simple: to take action with a heart of appreciation or gratitude. The antidote for fear is appreciation. If we focus on something that causes us to feel fear, then what we cannot experience is appreciation. The two emotions are accessed in different parts of our brain, different parts of the neural pathways.

To focus on our fear is to exclude what we are capable of, what we can learn from this and what we can appreciate. So the solution, or the antidote, is to move our focus to what we can appreciate in this moment. If we tap into that, the fear will tend to subside because it’s in a different part of the brain.

“Do the thing you fear most and the death of fear is certain.” -Mark Twain

The antidote to fear, is gratitude/appreciation. These two experiences use opposite sides of the brain, so it is literally impossible to experience fear at the same time as gratitude. So next time you’re feeling fear, stop and think about 3 things in your life which you are truly grateful for…and see what happens…
